When I was in my early teens, I was deeply immersed in the world of science fiction, with Jules Verne reigning as my favourite author. I vividly remember reading a book of his that detailed an audacious journey of a man from Earth to the Moon, in a metallic capsule. It was a concept that sparked my imagination, instilling in me a desire to undertake such a journey. If your younger self resonates with mine, then the Capsule Hotel in the Netherlands will surely captivate you. You must understand the significance of its name: it’s not just a metaphor, it truly is a capsule and visitors pay to experience the unique feeling of sleeping in one.
In essence, this capsule hotel is a repurposed TEMPS capsule, short for totally enclosed motor propelled survival craft. It is strategically stationed on water, and warmly welcomes its adventurous guests. Given the compact nature of the capsule, which measures around 4.25 metres in diameter, it doesn’t promise a grand level of comfort. Nonetheless, if curiosity overpowers you, it would cost you 70 euros to spend a night in this minimally equipped capsule.
However, if you crave a little bit more comfort, say a sheepskin hammock or a DVD player, or even a disco ball for that fun element, the cost can go up to 150 euros per night. While it might seem a little steep, the unique experience it offers is something that money can’t usually buy.
